I grabbed a copy of LA Strong: A Charity Comic for Victims of the Los Angeles Fires at the comic store yesterday. As expected, Mad Cave put together a gripping and heartbreaking collection of thoughts, images, and stories in this gorgeous collection. In the back half of the book, you’ll find my one-pager that I got to write and draw.
It feels like a lifetime ago that I did my story. I like that I followed the thread of “I don’t want to draw the fire.” For me personally, I didn’t know what kind of healing would come from trying to confront the thing that destroyed my friends’ homes. I couldn’t take the time to draw ash-coated rubble, either. It didn’t feel “good” to put myself through that process. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot in how my storytelling can be white magic or black magic. Doing the finishing touches on my book about grieving my dog Henry, every page has been a conversation of “this is a painful image… is it meant to heal the reader or is it meant to hurt them?” With LA Strong, I decided to focus not on the fire itself, but the people affected, the people around me, and the way this city loves to communicate best: through pop culture.
I’m so proud to be a part of this project, and I’m grateful to the artists who did go through the pain of drawing fire, ash, rubble, and pain. This book is all white magic.
In other news…
I am now a USA Today Bestseller! West Hollywood Monster Squad marks the first time one of my books crossed that threshold. It’s a major professional accomplishment, and I am so proud that it got to be the book Bradley and I poured our hearts and souls into! Please keep that pink engine going and order a copy if you haven’t yet. Or leave a review on Amazon and GoodReads. We’ve got Pride coming up, so there’s plenty to do!
I’ll be launching a kickstarter soon… yep, I’m finally gonna do it. For my book about pet grief. It’s gonna be amazing, and you’ll know more in the next few weeks!!!
I’m getting back on stages again! Last weekend I was invited to be a part of Lily Lady’s Poetry and Prose monthly show at El Cid, and I loved it so much I was able to get myself onto Joseph Schles' and Erica Dawson’s Masculine Str8 Men show in San Diego in a few weeks! Come to Mic Drop Comedy and have a laugh!
