Of course it took me losing my black curls and looking like a Persian Lex Luthor to realize how much I love Superman.
Today is Superman Day! Yay! In 2020, the Clark Kent of Smallville got me through the worst years of the pandemic. In 2023, Superman: The Harvests of Youth validated the belief in my bones that I could tell “Big Two” stories, and showed me the best side of comics. In 2024, Superman’s son let me talk about the incongruity of trauma (and gave me a friend in Nicole Maines). In 2025, Metropolis’ buzzy nightlife and resident maniacal billionaire genius showcased my voice for the people of the city. Superman brings out the best in people, and he most certainly has brought out the best in me.
Thank you, Kal-El. Thank you DC Comics. Thank you to editors Sara Miller, Paul Kaminski, Kathleen Wisnescki, Matt Levine, and Katie Kubert for letting me have the opportunities to date. Also, DC’s very own Clark Bull is a superhero that I don’t deserve having in my corner. Albert Ching, you are Pa Kent, Krypto, Lois, AND Clark all rolled up into one icon.
Enough about Superman!!
Today is also a day of major gratitude… my Life On Paws Kickstarter is not only a KS “Project We Love,” but it hit 300% funding and knocked out two stretch goals IN THREE DAYS. The pet portraits are officially gone, but there are still slots left for being drawn into a comic and owning a page of the book (as well as the gorgeous Deluxe option that comes with a rad bandana and sticker and bookmark). Now comes the craziest stretch goal of them all… 20K. If we hit that, then the book gets expanded with 8 more pages. If that happens, I will lose my mind. Who am I kidding, I’ve already lost my mind and cried about the success of this campaign a few times!!! THANK YOU for coming out and showing your support <3
Also, my co-worker Bea helped me snag a Labubu! I’m now officially hip and jiggy! I named it Georgina Oinks <3
In other news…
I got to talk with my Friend Tyler Austin at Skylight Books on their podcast about West Hollywood Monster Squad, and I spilled a juicy little tidbit from my youth that I’ve never done with a recording device in front of me! Take a listen.
And, if you like good music…
Morgan Nagler’s latest singles have been giving me LIFE. “Cradle The Pain” was so wonderful and inspiring that it ended up finding its way into some of my final Life On Paws pages, and her latest single “Orange Wine” captures exactly how I felt after submitting my taxes.
Right on!
